Ethel Mannin
Ethel Edith Mannin, novelista y escritora de viajes libertaria.
Nació el 6 de octubre de 1900 en Clapham, suburbio de Londres. De origen irlandés, fue la mayor de tres hermanxs de la pareja socialista formada por Robert Mannin y Edith Gray Mannin.
Empezó a escribir cuando tenía 7 años y a los 10 publicó el primer cuento. En 1915 acabó su educación formal, siempre en escuelas públicas, y empezó a trabajar de taquígrafa para la agencia de publicidad de Charles F. Highman.
En 1917 se convirtió en editora asociada del periódico deportivo y teatral The Pelican, cargo que ocupará hasta el 1919, cuando esta revista dejó de publicarse.
En 1923 presentó la primera novela a un concurso literario y, a pesar de no conseguir el galardón, los patrocinadores le publicaron la obra. En 1925 consiguió el primer éxito comercial y de crítica con la novela Sounding brass. En 1930 publicó su primer autobiografía, Confessions and impressions, que fue considerada altamente escandalosa a causa de las descripciones de sus relaciones extramatrimoniales y de sus costumbres bisexuales.
Poco a poco se convirtió en una autora prolífica -publicó más de cien libros (novelas, viages, autobiografías, libros infantiles y educativos, cuentos, etc.) y su intención era publicar una novela y una obra de no ficción cada año-, al mismo tiempo que en una mujer políticamente y socialmente comprometida, ya que sus temas fueron la mujer trabajadora, el feminismo, el sexo, el pacifismo, el anarquismo, la Guerra Civil española, el anticolonialismo, el agnosticismo y otros temas sociales.
En un principio, apoyó al Partido Laborista, pero ya durante los años treinta se desilusionó del socialismo. En 1936 visitó la Unión Soviética y volvió horrorizada del comunismo. Militó en el Independent Labour Party (ILP, Partido Laborista Independiente), pero dentro del anarcosindicalismo y el anarquismo.
Cuando estalló la Revolución española, participó activamente con Solidaridad Internacional Antifascista (SIA) y estuvo junto a Emma Goldman, de quie escribirá un ensayo titulado Red Rose (1941). En 1948 publicó una de sus novelas más populares, Late have I Loved thee (Tarde he llegado a amarte).
Fue una ferviente antisionista y siempre se mostró muy preocupada por la situación de lxs refugiadxs palestinxs, dedicando muchos artículos al tema. En 1958, se dedicó a viajar alrededor del mundo y escribió reportajes y libros infantiles.
Aunque gran parte de su vida transcurrió en Inglaterra (Wimbledon y Devon), también vivió en Connemara (Irlanda). En 1975 se retiró de la escritura. Ethel Mannin murió el 5 de diciembre de 1984 a causa de las complicaciones surgidas después de fracturarse la pelvis. Muchxs lectores de lengua inglesa se introdujeron al anarquismo leyendo sus obras.
